How to deal with noise chaos in open-plan offices?
Acoustics in an office, especially an open-plan office, is one of the most important issues that should be taken into account when designing such a space. A large room where many people work means constantly ringing phones, the sound of printers running, and conversations between employees. Proper sound insulation in such a place allows employees to enjoy at least a little bit of quiet and will certainly increase work efficiency.

Large, open-plan offices continue to enjoy unflagging popularity, with more and more companies opting for this layout. There is a good reason for this – being in the same room as colleagues promotes creativity, builds relationships, and improves communication and the flow of information and documents within the company. On the other hand, this type of work environment is a constant mix of conversations, the sounds of printers, ringing phones, footsteps, slamming doors, and ventilation noise. The noise in such an office can reach up to 60-70 dB (decibels). According to the Polish Standard PN-N-01307:1994, the acceptable noise level at work is 55-65 dB, while the acoustic comfort necessary for effective mental work is only provided at a level of 35-40 dB.
Several ways to reduce noise in office spaces
There are many proven and long-established ways to deal with noise in open-plan offices. Acoustic furniture, such as partition walls and desk dividers, is very popular. When used correctly, it reduces noise levels and also creates separate areas for individual work. Many companies decide to use acoustic carpeting, which effectively eliminates sounds such as footsteps, and when chosen well, makes the space feel cozy. A slightly different solution is acoustic wall panels, e.g., made of PET felt, which perfectly absorb sound, reduce reverberation time, and are also a great idea for decorating boring walls. To improve the acoustics in such a large space, suspended ceilings or ceiling islands will be invaluable. The latter are particularly noteworthy. Ceiling islands are ideal wherever it is not possible to install a suspended ceiling. These structures, suspended on steel cables, can be installed at various heights, depending on your needs, and their designer look allows for freedom of arrangement to suit the room, while significantly improving the acoustic conditions.

Noise chaos in the workplace can be a real distraction, which is why it is so important to soundproof office spaces. Acoustic comfort has a real impact on efficiency, work performance, and employee well-being. The acoustic solutions listed above will not only help control noise chaos in open-plan offices, but also decorate and furnish them.
